This study explores the relationship between perceived strategic importance of mobile data services (MDS) and its adoption. It explores if and how firms adopt and utilize MDS from a value chain perspective and how MDS helps firms improve performance. We proposed a research model of MDS use in business and collected data from 166 firms in South Korea on the way they utilize MDS, the level of readiness for the technology and the extent to which the technology impacts business performance. The study empirically validated the proposed research model and provided a more succinct and robust model that can be explored by future studies. An important contribution of this study is that it empirically observed the adoption and impact of MDS in business according to the value chain framework at an organizational level. The study provides a theoretical framework for researchers to continuously research the use of MDS in business.
