The Role of Victims on Crime Victimization: The Review on Korean Empirical Studies

The Purpose of this study is a review on various studies on the role of victims on crime victimization and a rating on an importance of the role of victims in crime incidence. This study consists of two part: One is a review on bi-dimensional relations and the other is multi-dimensional relations between the characters of victims and crime victimization. According to the review on Korean bi-and multi-dimensional analysis, the attractiveness of victim or the absence of guardianship was an important variable on the increase of crime victimization. Both in household crime(ex, burglary) and in personal crime(ex, murder or manslaughter, personal theft, robbery, rape, sexual harrassment and etc..), the higher attractive victims are, the more crime victimization are. But the intense of the victim responsibility was highly various from non-responsibility to full responsibility. This was changed by the type of crime and by the age of victim. Generally, in high school or college victims, the effects of the target attractiveness on crime victimization was stronger than adult part. And also that effects were stronger in personal crime (specially sexual assault or sexual harassment) than in property crime. Though, the effects of target attractiveness on crime victimization in multi-variate analysis were weaker than in bi-dimensional analysis. Finally, to some degree, target attractiveness was an important variable on crime victimization, but it was focused to specific crime types and specific victim types.
