A Study on Improvement for the Prevention of Second victims by the Police

When a crime occurs, a victim is suffered physically and mentally. Even though many institutions such as police, prosecutor's office and courts are trying to help crime victims, their services are not enough to satisfy various needs of crime victims. In this study, it is assumed that improvement of police service is important for fast recovery of crime victims because police usually contacts them at the early stage of offenses. Recently, more and more crime victims are suffered severely by the second crime victimization which is caused by careless crime investigation system and uncareful broadcasting by mass media. To solve these problems, this study suggests that improvement of crime investigation system and news covering patterns to care for crime victims and consider their painful and complex situation is necessary. And, more information which is related with offenders and criminal due processes should be provided to crime victims and their families. Also, mental recovery programs are helpful to treat and ease pain of crime victims. Finally, cleaning crime scene services are useful for crime victims and their families to return to their daily life styles. Besides, after considering crime victim support programs of other developed countries, realistic and effective crime victim support systems should be prepared.
