Experience on Client-Perpetrated Violence of Social Workers in Community Welfare Centers

This study examined 390 social workers in order to find out the experience of client-perpetrated violence in community welfare centers. The result from the research were 1) 76.2% of the respondents had been victimized in violent acts of a physical or nonphysical nature, and the primary type of violence is verbal harrassment. The social worker-victims of client-perpetrated violence experienced various psychological and physical pain. They were embarrassed, shocked, and angered after violence. Also, fatigue and stress, avoidance of contact with the perpetrator-client, and thought of job-change were showed. 2) based on demographic, work and agency-related variables of the workers, there are some differences in the experience of client violence between the workers' education, degree of licence, location of the centers. 3) 52.3% of the respondents reported the violence to their supervisor, and most of the center have not provided any opportunities for the violence control education and training to social workers. Based on these results, it was recommended that effective prevention strategies are needed in order to provide the social worker with safe work environment and to support the victimized workers.
