This study aims at assessing the relationship of alcohol abuse of parents to three different types of child abuse which include physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. Child abuse has become controversial concern recently among the media and academic professionals during the last decade in South Korea since heinous child abuses committed by parents had been revealed. More importantly, parental drinking problem or parents' alcohol abuse issues have been recognized as crucial factor for resulting in child abuse by numerous scholars. However, the essential impact of parents with drinking habit in associating with child abuse has received surprisingly little attention. The current study uses secondary data from Korea Social Science Data Archive. The original data(A1-2009-0042) was collected from 1,9885 elementary school students who responded to a survey questionnaire regarding "Child Abuse Victim Survey" in Busan. SPSS Package package program was used to estimate the impact of parents' alcohol abuse on child abuse. Specifically, multivariate regression model adjusted grade, gender, potential response to child abuse, family structure, family income, domestic violence were used to explore the effect of drinking problems of father and mother in terms of occurrence of child abuse. Child physical abuse was strongly associated with father's problematic drinking behavior in the first multivariate regression model. Although physical child abuse had statistical association with a father with alcohol abuse, the problem of drinking problems of parents was not identified as a key factor in increasing child sexual abuse in the second model. Interestingly, children exposed to neglect have been reported to be at significantly increased risk of having mother with a problem of alcohol abuse in the third model. The findings of this study enhance the explanation power of the ecological model of child abuse and stress the individualized intervention strategies for the three different types of child abuse in South Korea.
