Lee Sang’s Novels and Irony

이상의 소설은 고유한 내면성을 창조한다. 그 내면성은 아이러니에 의해서 표현되기도 하고, 그것에 의하여 만들어지기도 한다. 이상의 내면성은 아이러니한 정신 작용에 의해 부정적 지성으로 거듭 난다. 그렇게 아이러니는 이상의 소설을 지배하는 가장 두드러진 담화의 질서이자 서사의 규범이다. 소설의 주인공은 아이러니에 의해서 세계인식을 자기에게 적용한다. 아이러니는 자기 인식을 위한 반성적 성찰을 이끈다. 이상의 소설은 그러한 아이러니의 인식 구조를 반영한다. 우리는 그것을 이상의 소설만이 독특하게 지니는 탐구의 형식이라 부를 수 있다. 이상의 소설에서 아이러니는 두 가지 양상으로 나타난다. 하나는 말의 아이러니이고 다른 하나는 서사적 아이러니narrative irony이다. 전자가 서사 담론에서 발생한다면, 후자는 서사 구조에서 생성된다. 말의 아이러니는 수사학적 연구를 통하여 많이 다루어져 왔다. 그러나 서사적 아이러니는 거의 연구되지 않았다. 이상의 소설에서 보다 관심을 기울일 영역은 서사적 아이러니이다. 서사적 아이러니는 문제적 개인이 자신을 찾아가는 형식에서 발생한다. 주인공이 자기를 탐구하는 환멸과 각성의 과정을 그것은 담아낸다. 여기서 이상 소설의 내면성이 만들어진다. 「환시기」와 「동해」는 그러한 이야기 구조를 가장 잘 드러낸다. 「날개」와 「지주회시」 역시 이와 유사한 정신 구조를 가지고 있다. 서사적 아이러니는 이 작품들의 주제와 직접적으로 결합되어 있다.

Novels written by Lee Sang create unique internality. The internality is displayed by irony. Irony is the most noticeable factor in novels by Lee Sang. Heroes of his novels apply the view of the world to himself by irony. Irony brings about reflective thinking for self-recognition. Lee Sang express that ironic structure in his novels. We call it investigative structure. Irony is expressed in two ways in novels by Lee Sang. One is linguistic irony, and the other is narrative irony. The former is formed in narrative discourse. In contrast, the latter is formed in narrative structure. Linguistic irony has been studied in narrative research. In contrast, narrative irony is barely studied. However, the more important part of novels by Lee Sang is narrative irony. Narrative irony is formed in process of problematic individual’s self-exploration. It includes the individual’s disillusionment and arousal during the process. The internality of novels by Lee Sang is created in this process. “Hwansigi”(Record of Hallucination) and “Donghae” are typical examples of this structure. “Nalgae”(Wings) and “Jijuhwasi”(A Spider meets a pig) also share similar spiritual structure. Narrative irony is strongly related to themes of these novels.
