Korea Enamel : History and Status

칠보는 오랜 역사를 가진 전통공예임에도 불구하고, 독립적인 분류체계 조차 잡혀있지 않으며, 대중의 인식 또한 부족한 것이 현실이다. 따라서 칠보공예에 대한 역사적 배경을 알아보고 전통의 부활, 대중화, 협업화, 국제화에 대한 칠보의 현황을 파악하여 미래의 새로운 성장 전략이 필요하다. 이에, 보다 전문적이고 체계적인 훈련교육을 통하여 지속적으로 인재를 양성하고, 한국 고유의 칠보공예를 특화하여 미래의 고부가가치 산업으로써 칠보가 독자적인 공예로 성장할 수 있는 기반을 마련해야 한다.

Enamel is a traditional craft with a long history. However, enamel is even not considered as an independent craft. In reality the public recognition level is still very low. Thus, a new growth strategy of enamel craft should be sought through the revival of traditional enamel, popularization, cooperation, and globalization by studying the historical background and the present status. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously foster enamel craftsmen through more professional and systematic ways. It is also required to specialize Korean traditional enamel craft as future high value-added industry. As a result the enamel craft should certainly be regarded as an independent craft with the interest and support of the government.
