KWL 전략 활용 읽기 지도를 통한 초등학생의 영어 읽기 능력 발달 연구

An important aspect of helping learners to read effectively is to give appropriate reading strategy instructions. The purpose of this study was to investigate reading comprehension development of elementary school students by using KWL reading strategy as a primary instructional tool. This study was conducted on 52 5th grade students. The students in the experimental group were taught to read five theme-based texts based on KWL strategy and graphic organizers. For the quantitative analysis, PELT pre- and post-test were administered to check the students’ level of reading comprehension. For the qualitative analysis, data collected from KWL charts and interviews from the two students were analyzed. This study revealed that: (1) experimental group using KWL strategy instructions and explicit text structure instructions with graphic organizers showed significant improvement in their reading comprehension; and (2) the two different levels of students within the experimental group showed progress in their reading abilities. Consequently, students using KWL reading strategy as a way of developing thinking strategy had a positive reading experience and increased reading efficiency. Based on the positive results of the study, several suggestions for further study are provided.
