서예를 활용한 국어교과 「쓰기」 교육, 왜 필요한가?

The Necessity of 「Handwriting」 for the Korean Language Curriculum in School

본고는 현재 교육현장에서 화두가 되고 있는 인성 함양은 서예교육의 강화를 통해 이루어 질수 있다는 인식아래 국어 교육의 현황과 서예를 활용한 ‘쓰기’의 문화적 의미와 활용에 대해 살펴보았다. 현재 초등학교 국어교과 중 ‘쓰기’는 통합되어 진행되거나 소홀히 다루어지고 있고, 중학교의 경우도 ‘글쓰기’영역의 범주의 ‘쓰기’교육을 받으며 『국어』교과의 보충교재 역할정도로 활용되고 있다. 그러나 ‘쓰기’는 학생들의 미래를 위해 꼭 필요한 능력이다. 그러기에 글씨를 바르게 쓰는 행위에서부터, 글쓰기를 하는 모든 ‘쓰기’는 경필이나, 모필을 활용한 서예를 통해 이루어져야 한다. ‘쓰기’교육은 학교 교육에서 포기해서는 안 될 영역이며, 오히려 서예를 활용한 ‘쓰기’로 강화해야 한다. 국어교과 ‘쓰기’교육은 문화적으로 중요한 역할을 한다. ‘쓰기’행위는 아름답게 글씨만을 쓰는 것이 아니라 자신과 사회를 소통시켜 주는 중요한 매개체이기 때문이다. 사회적 소통은 ‘자기 다스림’을 통해 세상과 소통해야 한다. 서예를 통한 ‘쓰기’는 기능적 연마 이상의 정신적 가치를 배양하는 修身의 측면이 있기에 디지털 기기의 편리를 통한 쓰기와는 다르다고 할 수 있다. 현재 학생에게 주의력 결핍이나, 과잉행동장애 인터넷 중독 그리고 학교폭력, 집단 따돌림과 도를 넘어선 범죄의 증가 현상들은 디지털 문화의 역기능 때문이다. 공교육 현장에서 강조하는 인성교육 그 답은 키보드를 두드리며 쓰는 글쓰기가 아닌, 서예에 있다. 경필을 이용한 손글씨 쓰기만으로도 정신건강과 학습효과를 증가시킨다고 한다. 하물며 딱딱한 경필이 아닌 모필을 활용한 서예의 효과에 대해서는 더 이상 강조할 필요가 없을 것이다. 컴퓨터와 디지털 기기에 의해 퇴화되어 가는 아이들의 뇌와 정신건강을 더 이상 간과할 수 없다. 우리의 아이들이 윤리성과 도덕성을 가지고 아이들의 삶을 방식을 형성할 수 있도록 우리의 언어교육, 국어교과에서 서예를 활용한 ‘쓰기’교육이 활성화 되어야 한다.

In this paper are mainly discussed the cultural meaning of 'handwriting' that calligraphy implies and its application and the situation facing the current school education as many agree that character cultivation, the key goal of education depends on the degree of teaching calligraphy. Now elementary schools see that 'how to right handwrite' in the Korean language curriculum is integrated in 'handwriting' part or often neglected and that could be also identified in middle schools where 'handwriting' is limited to just assist as a supplement for the 『Korean language』 class. 'Handwriting', however, is an essential ability for students to prepare for their future. Thus, all concerning 'handwriting' should be implemented through calligraphy using a writing brush or a pen. The education of 'handwriting' cannot be given up in school and for China and Japan, 'handwriting' with a writing brush is included in their regular curriculum. In terms of its cultural meaning, 'handwriting' is not just for the right and beautiful writing skill but plays an important role as a medium for the smooth communication between him or her and society. A true communication is possible only when he or she is interested in controlling their mind and in that sense, 'handwriting' through calligraphy functions enough as an effective instrument to awaken spiritual value hidden in students under the digital device-dominating world. For adverse effect, digital culture has probably some responsibility for the increase of various cases such as ADHD (attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder), internet addiction, school violence, group bullying. To solve these problems, public education needs calligraphy, not keyboard-typing on the computer screen. Many researches show that handwriting using even a pencil improves mental health and promotes the achievements of learning, and there is no doubt about calligraphy using a brush is more than that. We can no longer neglect the fact that their brain gets deteriorate and mental health is badly affected by computers or other up-to-date digital electronics. 'Handwriting' education is required for helping our students to develop their morality and build up healthy life in the Korean language curriculum.
