초등학교공간에 관한 비판적 논의

A Critical Discussion of the Spatial Structure of the Elementary School

이 연구는 한국의 초등학교공간을 분석하고 비판적 논의를 통해 개선 방향을 탐색하는데 연구의 목적을 두고 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 인간과 공간과의 관계를 중심으로 초등학교공간의 특징을 살펴보고, 이에 근거하여 초등학교공간의 변천 과정과 공간별 특징을 비판적 관점에서 분석한 다음, 개선 방향을 탐색하였다. 초등학교공간의 역사적․법적․제도적 변천 과정을 고찰해 본 결과 일제시대의 외형을 벗어나지 못하고 있었으며, 주로 효율적인 학습과 훈육을 위한 공간 형태를 띠고 있었다. 또한 초등학교공간을 교수학습공간, 관리지원공간, 행사놀이공간, 보건위생공간으로 구분하고 공간별 특성을 분석한 결과 공간은 구분되어 있으나 공간별 특성에 따른 다양성을 담아내지 못하고 있었으며, 아직도 지도․관리․통제 중심의 구조가 작동되고 있었다. 현재의 초등학교공간의 한계를 극복하고 미래 지향적인 학교공간이 되기 위해서는 교육의 변화와 교육과정의 변화에 적합한 학교공간, 학교 공동체 모두가 참여하여 함께 만드는 학교공간, 아늑함을 느낄 수 있는 ‘집 같은 학교공간’, 다양성과 창의성이 묻어나는 학교공간으로 변화되어야 한다.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the problem of the space in the elementary school, and to find out a right way of its improvement. For this purpose, the authors try to examine the relationship between human beings and the space of their lives and the importance of the space in the elementary school, and to trace the historic change of the space in the school. The authors find that the space of the elementary school has been developed not for various different functions, i.e., for learning, administration, play, health care, and students’ welfare. The school space has been structured in a unformed and standardized type for the easy way of supervision, control and management, focusing on the external appearance of the school building. The authors conclude that the school space has to be changed according to the changes of the way of teaching and learning, and curriculum, because the spatial structure of the school is one of the important factor of students’ effectiveness in their school lives. It is recommendable to organize the school space like a house, so that the space can be used flexibly for many different activities.
