“War Against School Violence”: Discourse Analysis of Korean Schools’ Struggling with School Bullying

본 논문은 최근 한국의 학교교육에 만연된 집단괴롭힘 현상과 관련하여 교사 및 학생들의 담론을 분석하고, 그 대안적 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 본고는 집단괴롭힘 등으로 인해 학생들이 자살로까지 내몰리는 이러한 현실이 오늘날 학교에 만연된 폭력적 문화에 있다고 보고, 그 원인을 위계화된 학교구조 및 교권의 실추에서 찾고자 하였다. 본고의 논의를 위해, 우선 학교폭력의 개념 및 그 경험에 대한 현상학적 분석을 시도하였다. 이러한 개념적 틀을 바탕으로, 최근 우리나라 학교에서의 집단괴롭힘의 실상을 매체에 소개된 자료를 중심으로 학교폭력을 바라보는 학교관련 주체들의 담론을 분석하였다. 본고는 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 무엇보다 학교에서의 폭력적 문화를 근절하고 배려의 문화를 촉진하기 위해 위계화된 학교조직 보다는 보다 민주적인 학교조직을 만들어감과 동시에 실추된 교사의 권위를 살리는 방향으로 나아가야 함을 강조하였다. 결론적으로 본고는 관용의 문화가 학교교육에서 어떤 의미를 갖는지에 대한 논의와 실제적으로 학교폭력을 줄이기 위한 대안들에 대해 논의하였다.

This paper investigates the recent struggles in Korean society with the issues of school bullying. By discussing school bullying in the public schools, this paper argues that it is the culture of violence that consists of chronic exercises of violence, loss of teacher’s authority, and the hierarchical relationship among the members of the school milieu. To highlight this argument, this paper first illustrates the actual state of school bullying and violence in Korea. This paper then discusses the original causes of school bullying by analyzing the opinions of school members. Based on these arguments, this paper stresses that in order to overcome the culture of violence and to restore the culture of tolerance in Korean schools, it is necessary to nullify the power hierarchy and strengthen teachers’ responsibility and authority. Other strategies of preventing school bullying are also discussed.
