In Wilson's drama, ritual plays a healing, transformational role in the history of racial oppression and discrimination. Wilson's Afrocentric, cultural ritual underscores the importance of African rootedness through the restoration of history and the reconstruction of blackness. The community in The Piano Lesson strives to reconstruct their history by calling out their ancestors' spirits. They transform African ancestral spirituality into a tangible ritual to heal the past and harness the power to create a liberatory future. The process of reconstructing their history can be characterized as Victor Turner's social drama, in which the community is transformed into a communitas. Communitas, as Turner defines it, is an ideal, cooperative community in liminality. With the full creative potential of liminality, their ritual has the ability to transcend the limits of material reality to be connected with the world of the spirit, integrates the past into the redefined present and creates a new future.
