Analysis of Characteristics in Illustration of Art Make Up

Art makeup is like a beautiful painting on a human canvas. It is also perceived as an artistic activity which makes diverse illustrated expressions possible along with a new interpretation of the human body. This study has classified art makeup into face painting, fantasy makeup, and body painting and has investigated similarities and differences among them. In other words, under the assumption that a painting expressed on a human canvas is defined as 'illustration,' the diverse expressions and patterns of the illustration in art makeup have been examined through basic design elements: point, line, and plane. In addition, formal expression patterns were examined by dividing it into 3D expression and 2D expression(figurative, abstract, geometric, and drafted) ). Then, the aesthetic characteristics of the illustration in art makeup were analyzed after being classified into 'surrealistic,' 'recreational,' 'ornamental,' and 'non-harmonic.' The surrealistic characteristics which express fantastic and mysterious images are usually found in figurative or abstract expressions. On the contrary, the recreational characteristics which produce fun and excitement through deformation or abnormality are easily detected in both 2D and 3D expressions. The ornamental characteristics which tend to add something with a goal of pursuing ultimate beauty are commonly found in the objet technique. Lastly, the non-harmonic characteristics which are close to anti-aesthetic and ugly images and pursue eerie and eccentric patterns are found in both 2D and 3D expressions. In art makeup, as described above, harmonious images should be expressed using basic design elements (point, line and plane), and strong and fancy designs should be created based on an artist's intention using various colors and objects. Therefore, this study has offered basic visual data with which new and sensitive expressions can be freely expressed to establish the grounds for modern art makeup.
