Sociocultural Influence on Appearance as Appearance Management Attitude among Adolescent Girls and Boys

The purposes of this study were to verify how sociocultural pressure factors had an influence on objectification and to examine the relationship of appearance management attitude focusing on gender difference in adolescents. To achieve the purposes, a questionnaire was given to 273 female adolescents and 246 male adolescents, whose ages were from 13 to 17. Data were analyzed by structure equation modeling of Amos 18.0 and SPSS 18.0 program. The results of this study were summarized as follows: First, there were significant differences in sociocultural pressure and objectification between female adolescents and male adolescents. Second, an adolescent's objectification was related positively to cosmetic management attitude in female adolescents and male adolescents. Third, an adolescent's objectification was related positively to weight control attitudes. Forth, objectifications have a significant mediating effect on the relationship between sociocultural pressure factors and cosmetic management attitude & weight control attitude in female adolescents and male adolescents
