교육형평성을 위한 대학의 역할 사례

The Role of University for Educational Equity: Case Study of the Preuss School UCSD

이 연구는 미국 UCSD가 세운 차터스쿨인 프뢰스학교(The Preuss School) 사례를 통해 ‘교육형평성을 위한 대학의 역할’을 탐색한다. 연구 질문은 첫째, 대학의 교육적 전문성을 녹여낼 때 불리한 학생들을 위해서는 어떠한 학교운영 모델이 가능한지, 둘째, ‘대학교 지원형 학교’ 운영은 대학교의 핵심 기능에 어떠한 함의를 주는 지이다. 연구 결과 불리한 학생을 위한 중등학교 모형의 특성으로는 1) 교육적 관계의 깊이와 넓이의 확장, 2) 학생 이해에 중심을 둔 교수 능력, 3) 학생의 현실적 조건을 고려한 세심한 배려, 4) 불리한 학생들이 주인공이 되는 교육과정 등이 도출된다. 대학의 중등학교 개입은 1) 교육 기능과 관련하여 학생 이해에 기반을둔 교육적 전문성을 함양하는 기회가 되고, 2) 연구 기능과 관련하여 제한된 실험실에서가 아닌 참여형 연구를 통해 연구 결과의 확산성을 확보하며, 3) 지역사회 공헌과 관련하여 지역 중등학교에서의 교육 과정과 결과의 평등에 기여한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to explore ‘the role of University for educational equity’ based on the case study of the Preuss school UCSD, the charter school. The first question of this research is ‘what kind of schooling model is possible for disadvantaged students when the educational expertise of university is engaged?’, and the second one is ‘what does the‘university-assisted school’ mean for the core role of the university?’ As the features of the education model for disadvantaged students, this case reveals the importance of 1) the expansion of the depth and length of educational relationship, 2) teaching expertise based on understanding of students, 3) careful consideration of the realistic condition of students, and 4) disadvantaged students centered curriculum. It is significant in that the university, through its active involvement in secondary school partnerships, 1) has the opportunity to strengthen the expertise of teaching by reference to understanding of learners in terms of an educational function, 2) secures the competency of academic research on the basis of participation research instead of lab-based research in relation to the research function, and 3) contributes to the equity of the educational process and outcome in the local secondary school as its commitment to the community.
