As part of a larger research project that addresses English teachers' needs for teaching speaking and writing in preparation for National English Ability Test (NEAT), this study proposes models for teaching speaking to high school students. Teaching models were developed with an aim to deal with communicative functions and skills related to NEAT speaking items within a framework that is flexible enough to be applicable to various teaching conditions. Toward this goal, the researchers analyzed five NEAT speaking items to extract the main features as well as devise ways of addressing them without being constrained by the use of particular textbooks and chapters. On the basis of the analysis, lesson plans were developed to deal with the NEAT items and relevant communicative skills in various teaching conditions. Derived from these lesson plans were teaching models in the form of general frameworks that can be easily adaptable by teachers in their own teaching circumstances. The paper focuses on explaining these teaching models and concludes by emphasizing the importance of such models to promote teaching speaking through public English education.
