The Social Participation of English Women in View of Tea Life and Tea Gowns in the First Half of the 20<sup>th</sup> Century

This paper concerns the changing characteristics of tea life of English women in the early 20<sup>th</sup> century and its socio-economico-political implications Ed - highlight: Do you mean “economic”? with regard to the tea space, tea room, social life, the tea dance, and, finally, the style of tea gowns. Tea rooms offered a leisure space and a medium for social communications for women, resulting in finding self-identity, the widening cultural consumption, and an egalitarian society, which is the main theme of modernity. Enjoying outdoor tea life with tea gowns that were both convenient and elegant contributed to enhancement of the consciousness of women’s rights and solidarity. In particular, tango tea or tea dance gave 20<sup>th</sup> century English women a sense of freedom and open catalysis from everyday life. Tea was not just a cup of beverage, but a very important socio-cultural medium for setting new Ed -highlight: Can you say “not just a beverage”? social trends and promoting social participation of English women.
