The purpose of this study is to examine how poetic meaning and its tension are created by analysing ‘plant’ metaphors in Kim Hyeon-Seung's early period poetry. To analyse in the level of discourse, Hrushovski's metaphor theory is used. Kim Hyeon-Seung's poems are mainly focused on human-oriented ‘solitude’. However, the 'transcendence' flowing through his poetic tracks is more original theme. In Kim Hyeon-Seung's early period poetry, desire of transcendence is originated from nature worlds. This is the reason why in this study ‘plant’ is chosen as a main topic to be discussed. Plant is the best aesthetic symbol among natures in his early period poetry. This study focuses on that plant constitutes a link of metaphoric meanings beyond images or symbolic meanings. Plant in his early period poetry is metaphorically formed by rise and descent or openness and dissolution. Transcendent will toward the modernized negative reality with limited existence expresses several meanings through openness and dissolution metaphor, which this study mainly concentrates on. Although tension in Kim's early period poetry is easy to be weakend because his poems are very ideal and have a tendency to take part in realities, the tension is kept by using metaphors. This is the significance of this study. In addition, this study has another meaning to understand aesthetic senses in his early period poetry.(Seoul Theological University)
