An Analysis of Trade Structure of Korea's Main Export Products by Specific Continent

The purpose of the study was to analyse trade structure of Korea's main export goods by specific continent. For the purpose, this study selected 9 continents as an export target area and 10 Korea's export commodities as an export product. Trade Specialization Index, Export Bias Index, and Revealed Comparative Advantage Index were chosen as an analyzing method. Analyzing period was 2009-2012. The findings were as follows: many of the main products were exported to Asia, North America and Europe, while only a few products to Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Africa. In particular, among the main exports the competitiveness of automobile and steel plates was high, whereas of petroleum products and semiconductors was relatively low. The results show the diversification of export markets and export items is needed to increase Korea's exports. In this regard, the ways to increase export to Latin America, and Africa, etc. should be actively pursued, and the strategic approaches to mitigate the competitiveness deviation between exports be required.
