The purpose of this study is as follows. First of all, characteristics of the skin of female university students were studied along with the awareness of Blemish Balm (B.B. cream). Secondly, the coloration of skin of female university students was investigated. Lastly, investigation was made as to whether the application of a blemish balm can correct skin tone. This study used a survey that targeted 228 female university students who live in Chungnam along with a special clinical demonstration for measuring skin tone targeting 43 female university students at K University. Results indicated that there are many female university students who misunderstand blemish balm as a foundation that corrects skin tones. Study subjects accepted some change in concealing defects according to the application of the blemish balm but felt their makeup was inferior after applying the blemish balm. The result indicated that colors of skin can be different according to skin tone and areas of skin. A blemish balm brightens the skin in general but corrects red and yellow color tones differently so that it can't make all users look natural. In conclusion, blemish balms used in place of foundation should be diversified in order to suit respective skin types such as through developing products with various colors. As people have recognized blemish balms as functional cosmetics, it should accordingly be possible to add some functions such as skin renewal, sun block, skin-lightening (whitening), and face-lifting, etc. Also, there is a need to develop diverse colors of blemish balm to be applied to individual skin types and colors so as to not only match individual skin tones satisfactorily but also look natural. Moreover, future research about functional blemish balms and the affect of coloring could be developed.
