The purpose of this study is to examine the influence that listening lessons incorporating English listening strategy training have on the listening ability and listening strategy usage of learners, using American soap operas which can stimulate learners’ motivation and interest. To do this, the study scrutinized the difference in learners’ listening ability and use of listening strategies between the experimental group that took part in listening strategy training and the control group that did not. With the purpose and study questions stated above, an experimental research was conducted on two groups of college students taking an English elective course in a local university. After the twelve-week experimental lessons, this research has statistically proven that the implementation of listening strategy training in the class with American soap operas is effective in improving learners’ listening ability. Also, the analysis of learners’ scores on the use of listening strategies showed that incorporating listening strategy training in the lesson with American soap operas has more positive effect on learners’ actual use of the listening strategies. Based on the results, the study provides a listening teaching model implementing listening strategy training using American soap operas in college English teaching.
