Some Reflections on Task-Based Language Teachingin a High School EFL Class

The purpose of this study is to encourage the English teachers in Korea to try out TBLT with more confidence and better strategies. As the background the study briefly describes what TBLT is and how the constraints of the EFL context can be overcome in practicing TBLT. It then introduces a TBLT procedure practiced with twenty-five high school students, including the content of teaching and the method of performance evaluation. Finally, the study administers a questionnaire survey on what the students think about TBLT. For some supplementary data it also analyzes students’ performance in the traditional test and in the TBLT evaluation and conducts an interview with twelve students (six from the higher-ability group and six from the lower-ability group). Based on the result, the study concludes that TBLT can be implemented in the EFL class at least partially, if not fully, but there are factors to be considered for an effective implementation.
