부모의 사회경제적 특성에 따른 청소년의 생활시간 비교

Differences in Time Use of Adolescent by Parental Socioeconomic Characteristics

이 연구는 누구에게나 동일하게 주어지는 하루 24시간을 어떤 활동으로 구성하는지에 따라 학업성취가 달라질 수 있고 이는 부모의 사회경제적 특성에 따라 차이가 있을 것이라는 전제 하에 출발하였다. 만 10세 이상 초등학생과 중학생을 대상으로 1999년과 2009년 생활시간조사 자료를 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 사실을 발견하였다. 첫째, 어머니의 교육수준이 높아질수록 학습과 독서 시간은 길어지고 TV 시정시간은 짧아졌다. 둘째, 초등학생의 경우에는 어머니의 교육수준이 높이질수록 문화생활 시간이 길어졌으며 중학생의 경우에는 컴퓨터 게임시간이 짧이졌다. 셋째, 부모의 사회경제적 특성 중 어머니의 교육수준이 중요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 아버지의 직업은 일관적인 경향성을 나타내지 않았고 맞벌이 여부는 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 시간이 경제적 자원 못지않게 중요하게 부각되는 시점에서 부모의 사회경제적 특성에 따른 청소년의 시간사용의 차이는 학업성취와 계층 간 차이로 이어질 수 있다는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다.

This study examines whether or not time use of adolescent is different depending on parents' socioeconomic characteristics. Analyzing elementary and middle school children's time diary, findings are as follows. First, as the mother's educational level increases, children's studying and reading time increase and TV watching time decrease. Second, negative relationship between the mother's educational level and time for computer game is only significant for middle school children. Third, among parental socioeconomic characteristics, only the mother's educational level exerts an important influences on the children's time use. Given that time becomes an important resource, different time use of adolescent by parents' socioeconomic characteristics can be linked to different academic achievement and class stratification.
