Identity Formation of Young Adulthood: The Interaction with Significant Others

본 연구는 초기 성인기에 해당하는 미혼 남녀들의 성인 정체성의 구성요소들에 관한 인식과 성인 정체성 구성에서 중요한 타자들의 역할에 대해 탐구하였다. 만 25세부터 34세에 해당하는 미혼 남녀 24명을 대상으로 심층면접하고 콜라찌(Colaizzi)의 주제분석방법을 통해 결과를 기술하였다. 성인 정체성의 주요 구성영역은 다섯 가지 영역으로 구분되며, 각 영역에서 성인됨의 판단기준이 되는 의미주제들이 분류되었다. 이때 동일한 상황에 대해서 참여자들이 부여하는 주관적, 심리적 의미부여에 띠라 성인 정체성의 판단이 다름을 발견하였다. 또한 성인 정체성을 인지함에 있어 중요한 타자와의 분리와 연결이 중요하게 작용함을 발견하였다. 이러한 결과는 사례연구 결과에서 보다 분명하게 드러나서 개인적 수준에서 중요한 타자와의 분리와 연결의 관계를 통해 복수 정체성을 형성하고, 개인들은 자신의 성인 정체성을 형성하기 위해 타협을 진행하고 있음도 발견하였다.

This study explored elements of the adulthood identity among the unmarried men and women, and also the role of the significant others in the identity formation. We collected date from the unmarried men and women aged from 25 to 34 through in-depth interviews. We described the results using Collaizzi's thematic analysis method. Major areas of the adulthood identity are Aisted of 5 areas. We categorized themes which were working as basis of adulthood identity within each area. We found differences in identity formation depending on the subjective, psychological meanings bestowed on the same situation. We found that there was an important mechanism of the separation from or the connectedness with significant others, as a result of the case study analysis. Because of the participants' multiple identity which were built while they were interacting with significant others, they were in the process of the negotiation to build their own adulthood identity formation.
