This paper explores complex metaphor in which more than one conceptual metaphor are combined to understand a single metaphorical linguistic expression. This study aims to examine the complex metaphor in political speech, especially Korean and American presidents' inaugural addresses, and provide the types of complex metaphor. They are the metaphors combined with metonymy, and the multiple metaphors combined with one another, which are divided again as successively linked multiple metaphors or cooperatively functioning multiple metaphors by the way of combination including their own characteristics. Besides, this study presents the order of activation of conceptual metaphors in combination. Finally, this paper shows the pattern of conceptual integration partially and demonstrates that we experience the complex cognitive process while using language.
