A Study on the Business and Operation Efficiency Analysis of Container Terminal Operators in Korea

The aim of this study is to examine business strategies of TOCs, analyze an efficiency level of major TOCs in Korea by dividing into operational and sales perspective in a pursuit of sustainable TOCs and explore development plans by suggesting viable improvements This study is used two models. The CCR model supposes constant returns to scale while BCC model presumes variable returns to scale. Both models were Input oriented models pertaining to operational and sales perspective. As a result of the comparison between operational and sales efficiency, in the operational efficiency perspective, the bigger size of facilities shows higher terminal efficiency, and the results suggest that relative inefficient TOCs can improve their efficiency by reducing slack of equipments. For sales perspective, it is shown that they are able to boost container terminal efficiency by augmenting berth occupancy rate, arrivals/departures and sales simultaneously.
