학교특성에 따른 사교육 참여와 효과 차이 분석

An analysis on between-school differences of private tutoring time and its effect on student achievement

이 연구는 학교에 따라 학생들이 사교육에 참여하는 시간과 사교육이 학업성취에 미치는 영향력이 다른지를 밝히고, 이러한 차이에 관련되어 있는 학교의 특성을 탐색하였다. 분석은 2012년도 국가수준 학업성취도 평가 자료를 이용하여 초, 중, 고등학교별로 이루어졌고, 2 수준 다충모형을 적용하였다. 분석결과, 초, 중, 고등학교에서 사교육 참여 시간과 사교육이 학업성취에 미치는 영향력이 학교 간에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 초, 중, 고등학교에서 공통적으로 이러한 차이에 관련되어 있는 학교 특성은 지역, 학교규모, 교과관련 방과 후 학교 참여율, 학교만족도 등으로 나타났다. 학교 규모가 작고, 대도시가 아닌 지역이면서, 학교만족도가 높은 학교일수록 학생들의 사교육 참여 시간이 짧아질 뿐만 아니라 사교육 효과 또한 작게 나타나는 경향이 있었다. 또한 교과관련 방과후학교 참여율은 사교육 시간과는 비교적 무관하지만 사교육 효과를 의미 있게 줄여주는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과들을 바탕으로 학교 교육을 통해 사교육에 대응하려면 학교의 규모를 축소하고 방과후학교 활성화와 학생들의 학업성취 수준 향상을 통해 학교교육에 대한 만족도를 높이는 데 초점을 둘 필요가 있다는 점을 논의하였다. 이와 함께 사교육 경감 대책(사업)은 단위학교 차원을 넘어 지역 단위로 그 범위를 넓혀 추진될 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.

This study aims to explore school characteristics related with student's private tutoring time and its effect on academic achievement. For this purpose this study analyzes the data of 2012 National Assessment of Educational Achievement using multi-level modeling. In result, the amount of private tutoring that students invest is significantly different among schools. And also the effect of private tutoring on achievement is different among schools. These differences are significantly related with the school characteristics such as region, school size, enrollment rate of after school program, and school satisfaction. The amount and the effect of private tutoring decreases in a small size school, a school with more satisfied students, and a school located in small city or rural region. And the high enrollment rate of after-school program diminishes an effect of private tutoring on student achievement. Based on these findings, an implication on the private tutoring policy is discussed.
