The Nursing Students' Attitude and Preventive Activities against Inpatients' falls

Purpose: The study aimed to investigate the nursing students' attitude and preventive activities against inpatients' falls. Method: This is a descriptive study. Participants of the study include 431 nursing students. Data were collected from March 14th to April 5th, 2011. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS program version 17.0. Result: The findings of the study revealed that 74.2% of the participants had rendered fall-related education. 87.6% of them responded that the education was taking classes in nursing schools and 60.3% of them responded that the education was insufficient. The mean score of participants' attitude against falls was 3.73 of 5. Participants who had taken classes of fall prevention had significantly better attitude than the others (t=3.42, p=.001). The mean score of activities to prevent falls was 3.59 of 5. Participants who had taken classes of falls prevention had significantly better activities to prevent falls than the others (t=2.56, p=.011). There was a significant positive correlation between attitude against fall occurrence and activities to prevent falls (r=.176, p<.001). Conclusion: The score of the nursing students' attitude and activities to prevent falls was not high.
