The Study on Dynamic Capabilities, Differential Advantage and Performance Across Inno-Biz Firms' Strategic Types

This study explores to find out main reasons why some Inno-Biz finns perform well but the others are not in the same growth stage. Based upon resource-based theory, the main purpose of this research is to investigate performance differences by validating the relationships among dynamic capabilities, differential advantage and performance across strategic types. Data were collected from 230 Inno-Biz finns to verify the proposed research model and hypotheses using cluster analysis and structural equation modeling. The specific results were found as follows. First, two unique strategic types, called, market-driven cluster(MDC) vs. technology-driven cluster(TDC) were identified based upon dynamic capabilities such as organizational capabilities, technological capabilities, and marketing capabilities. Second, in case of MDC, marketing capabilities such as new product development competences and communication competences significantly affect technology advantage which results in high performance. On the other hand, entrepreneurship and communication competences significantly influence market position which does not result in significant performance, though. Third, in case of TDC, flexibility, innovativeness, entrepreneurship, and new product development competences significantly impact on technology advantage which results in high performance. On the other hand, any dynamic capability does not have influence on market position which does not result in significant performance. In summary, in case of MDC, marketing capabilities such as new product development competences and communication competences were important to enhance performance through technology advantage, not market position. But, in case of TDC, technological capabilities such as flexibility and innovativeness were important to improve performance via technology advantage.
