The Development of a Supplementary Facebook Learning Model at a Cyber University

This paper aims to 1) describe the design of a supplementary learning model by incorporating online learning and Facebook for a Basic English Reading and Speaking course at a cyber university, 2) investigate students' perspectives on this model and 3) determine effectiveness of the model. A total of thirty nine students from a cyber universities participated in this study. A mixed methods approach was employed to analyze the collected data, including pre-and post- tests, pre- and post- survey questionnaires, mid-term and final exam results, interviews, and qualitative data from student homework messages on Facebook. The results are as follows: 1) this model was designed by the principle of progressive learning and integrative English learning; 2) the students' perspectives on using Facebook as a supplementary to the course were positive, and they considered it interesting and useful for learning English collocations; 3) the participants showed some improvements in collocation learning. Based on the findings, implications and useful instructional strategies are provided for future research.
