자폐 범주성 장애학생의 성공적인 대학생활을 위한 지원 요구 및 방안

A Study of Support System of College Education for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Based on the Experiences and Perspectives of College Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Their Parents

최근에 들면서 자폐 범주성 장애 학생의 대학진학에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있으며, 실제로 대학에 진학하는 사례도 늘어나고 있다. 그러나 자폐 범주성 장애 학생은 주요 장애 특성인 사회 의사소통 결함과 독특한 행동 특성으로 인하여 대학진학을 준비하는 과정에서부터 실제로 대학생활을 영위하는 전 과정에 걸쳐 지원을 필요로 한다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 이러한 지원을 체계적으로 제공해줄 수 있는 제도를 수립하기 위한 기초자료 제공을 목적으로 대학에 재학하고 있거나 졸업한 자폐 범주성 장애 청년과 그 어머니를 대상으로 심층면담 및 포커스면담을 실시하였다. 그 결과 (1) 자폐 범주성 장애 학생의 특성, (2) 본인과 가족의 자폐 범주성 장애에 대한 이해와 자각, (3) 대학진학 준비 과정 및 지원요구, (4) 대학생활 경험 및 지원요구, (5) 미래 관련 고민 및 지원요구의 5개 주제 및 12개 하위주제가 도출되었다. 본 논문에서는 도출된 주제를 중심으로 연구결과를 제시하고, 연구결과에 따라 자폐 범주성 장애 학생의 성공적인 대학생활을 지원하기 위한 체계적인 제도 수립과 관련된 시사점을 논의하였다.

Recently, there has been an increase in college education for students with autism spectrum disorders(ASD). Students with ASD have major deficits in social and communicative abilities as well as unique behavioral difficulties. As more students with ASD reach college age, there is a greater need to support them to adapt themselves to new college circumstances. The purpose of this study was to find how students with ASD attending or graduated college and their parents experience and perceive on the process of college entrance exam and college education and to draw up suggestions to support successful college education for them. For the purpose of the study, 6 young adults with ASD and their mothers participated in in-depth interviews and focus group interviews, respectively. Five themes and twelve sub-themes were emerged from the qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts. Five major themes are the following: (1) characteristics of students with ASD, (2) understanding and perceptions of students with ASD and their parents on the characteristics of ASD, (3) preparation and needs for the process of college entrance exam, (4) experiences and needs related college education, and (5) concerns and needs related to the future. Based on the results of the study, implications to develop support systems for facilitating successful college education of students with ASD were discussed.
