Ranking as an evaluation tool of the university performance is expanding its influence on the university world, especially in Korea along with the United States. University ranking institutions justify the practice by claiming that it provides the information of university performances to university stakeholders and thereby the university is encouraged to enhance the performance. However, an examination of ranking practice reveals that ranking drives universities into the market-oriented competition. The consequence is that the university is changing itself from an academic community of teachers and students into a commodity of capitalistic enterprise. This essay begins with the examination of the Joongang Daily University Ranking, the most influential university ranking in Korea. After this, it goes into the historical and theoretical exploration of the university ranking practice in accountability and the dominance of scientific, not narrative, knowledge over the knowledge production process in the university. The examination of the Joongang Daily University Ranking over the past 10 years reveals that the status quo of the ranks of Korean top universities is almost fixed while the ranking neither provides the genuine information of university missions nor encourages universities to perform the mission. The ranking concerns only with performance indicators illustrated in numerical figures. The numerical figures function as a driving force to transform universities into profit-seeking corporations. The university ranking as accounting also functions to transform the university into a prey of corporate capital of profit-seeking ranking institutions. The latter part of the essay traces the historical and theoretical ground of the ranking practice and the consequence of the modem university's ruin by the practice. The rationale of university ranking is accountability for the university performance ex post facto. This leads the university to the performance oriented scientific knowledge production center, which means that narrative knowledge, the product of the humanities and social sciences is no more the main concern of the university. When narrative knowledge loses the leading role in the university, the university is inevitably placed in ruins since the intellectual and moral development of the university members cannot be expected in the university.
