섬유 소재와 여성성의 표현에 관한 고찰

A Study on Textiles and the Expression of Femininity

현대예술은 각 장르들 간의 경계를 허물면서 그 범위를 넓혀감에 따라 작품의 주제에 있어서도 과거에는 다룰 수 없었던 사회, 정치적인 문제, 인권과 여성에 대한 문제 등에 대해서도 자유롭게 표현할 수 있게 되었으며, 또한 작품을 표현하기 위한 도구적인 부분, 즉 매체의 선택에 있어서도 신소재와 미디어, 과학기술 등을 기존의 매체들과 접목시키는 방법으로 더욱 다채롭고 실험적인 시도가 가능하게 되었다. 다양한 매체들 가운데에서도 특히 섬유는 여성작가들에게 애용되고 있는 매체로써 많은 작가들이 섬유를 작품의 주재료로 선택함으로써 ‘여성의 감수성’ 및 ‘여성성’의 본질, 그리고 그 관념에 대한 표현을 극대화하고 있다. 현대에 존재하는 수많은 매체들 중에서 유독 섬유가 여성성의 표현에 있어 두드러지는 역할을 하게 된 것은 단순히 여성작가의 수가 예전에 비해 늘었다는 이유만은 아닐 것이다. 그렇다면 많은 여성작가들이 그들 작품의 주재료로 섬유를 선택하고 있는 이유가 무엇인지, 그리고 그들이 섬유라는 매체를 통해 나타내고자 하는 관념은 무엇이며, 또한 섬유가 가지고 있는 어떠한 특성이 여성성과 연관성 및 동질성을 가지는 것인지에 대하여 심도 있게 고찰해 볼 필요가 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 의문을 출발점으로 먼저 여성성의 정의와 역사 속에서의 여성성 등에 대한 이론적인 연구를 선행하였고, 그 이론을 토대로 여성의 일과 섬유에 대한 역사적 고찰을 통해 섬유와 여성성의 연관성과 동질성에 대하여 총괄적으로 연구해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 섬유를 주재료로 선택하여 여성성을 주제로 작품을 제작하고 있는 서구와 중국의 대표적인 작가 루이스 부르주아(Louise Bourgeois), 에바 헤세(Eva Hesse), 아네트 메사제(Annette Massage), 낸시 데이비드슨(Nancy Davidson), 그리고 중국의 작가 천칭칭(陳慶慶, Chen, Qingqing), 인시우젼(尹秀珍, Yin, Xiuzhen), 린톈묘(林天苗, Lin, Tianmiao), 천이엔잉(陳妍音, Chen, Yanyin) 8인을 선정하고 그 작품들을 통해 그들이 어떻게 섬유 소재를 응용하여 여성에 대한 관념을 표출하고 동질성과 표현력을 극대화시키고 있는 지에 대하여 알아보고자 한다.

As contemporary art has dissolved the borders between different genres and extended its scope, artists can now freely express their own ideas in themes that could not have been covered in the past, such as issues about the society, politics, human rights and women. Moreover, in terms of selecting the tools, or mediums, to express their works, artists can now make more diverse and experimental attempts by converging new materials, media and scientific technology with the existing mediums. Among various mediums, textiles are especially favored by female artists. Many artists choose textiles as the main materials for their works, maximizing the essence of 'female sensibility' as well as 'femininity', and the expression of such ideas. Why has the medium of textiles, of all the other mediums, been selected by so many artists to express the idea of femininity? The reason why textiles, among so many mediums in the modern times, have come to play a prominent role in expressing femininity may not be just ostensible. Thus, it is necessary to thoroughly consider the questions of why many female artists are selecting textiles as the main materials for their works, what are the ideas they intend to depict through the medium of textiles, and what points of femininity have a correlation and homogeneity with the distinct characteristics of textiles. With these questions as the starting point, this study first conducted a theoretical research on the definition of femininity and femininity in history, based on which it comprehensively studied the correlation and homogeneity of women's career and textiles. Thus, this study selected Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Annette Massage, Nancy Davidson, Chen Qingqing, Yin Xiuzhen, Lin Tianmiao, Chen Yanyin 8 representative artists in the West and China who are producing works with textiles as their main materials to express the idea of femininity. Through their works, this study aims to examine how they express the idea of women using the medium of textiles and maximize the homogeneity and expressiveness, and to shed new light on the current positions of textiles and femininity in contemporary art.
