This paper explores the impact of global production sharing on firm performances of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Using unique Korean firm-level data, we find that SMEs benefit from relocation of production abroad. Empirical evidences show that there are strongly positive impacts of offshoring on firm productivity and these effects are manifest when firms choose to offshore to ASEAN through external suppliers rather than foreign affiliates. These results suggest that strategic choice of global engagement to take advantage of lower transaction costs may be suitable to SMEs.
