Recomposing the Studio - The studio as a Multiple Shape of Participation and Collaboration

작가의 작업실은 오늘날 어떤 의미인가. 작가에게 있어서 작업실은 자신의 작업이 생산되고 보여지는 첫 번째 공간이다. 다니엘 뷔랭의 글 「작업실의 기능」(1971)에서 살펴볼 수 있듯, 작업실 바깥으로 나온 작가의 작업이 타인에게 어떻게 ‘보여질 것’인가의 문제는 동시대 미술에서도 첨예한 문제를 제기한다. 작업실은 작품의 첫 번째 제자리이며, 큐레이터나 외부 미술제도가 개입하기 힘든 작가만의 공간으로 여겨졌다. 살균 처리된 화이트 큐브의 말끔한 공간보다 여러 가지 작업 도구와 미완성, 완성된 작품이 뒤섞인 어지러운 작업실은 왜 흥미를 불러일으키는 것일까? 그것은 작업실이 예술 창작의 장소이기도 하지만 항상 고정된 자리 배치를 유지할 수 없는 ‘삶의 장소’이기 때문이다. 화가에게 있어서 스튜디오는 그의 재료와 그의 화폭, 그가 지금까지 생산해 낸 작업들의 저장소이며 그의 사상이 움틀 거리는 장소이다. 공동 작업실의 역할을 겸하는 레지던시 제도에서 작가의 개성은 어떻게 창출되는가? 이 글은 작가의 내밀한 장소인 동시에 외부로 나아가는 첫 장소인 작업실을 살핀 후, 2013년 동시대 미술에서 새로운 작업 방식을 선보이는 장소로서의 작업실을 탐구한다.

What does the artist’s studio mean today? For an artist, the studio is a place where his/her works are created and first shown. As Daniel Buren wrote in “The Function of the Studio”(1971), the way the works are shown to the others outside of the artist’s studio raises critical issues in contemporary art. The artist’s studio has been regarded as the first place for the artwork as well as the place of the artist’s own where curators or other external art institution cannot intervene. Why the artists’ studios, which are often messed up with various tools and finished or unfinished works, are more interesting than the sterilized neat and clean white cube? Probably, it is because the artist’s studio is not only a place of creation but also a place of life where fixed arrangement of things is not always possible. For an artist, the studio is a place where his/her material, canvases, and works are stored and ideas are generated. Then how the characteristics of each artist are expressed in residency programs which also serve as common studios? This article looks into the artist’s studio which is not only an intimate place of the artist but also the first outlet for the work, and then reviews the studio as a place to display new kinds of working methods for contemporary art of 2013.
