Sim Sora’s Glassworks: Structural sculpture, sculptural plane, plane painting, plane installation, and installation-like craft

10년 넘게 유리라는 재료를 선택하여 다양하게 조형적 실험을 진행해 온 심소라의 유리조형 작품은 공예 적이기보다는 조각적이고 때로는 회화적이기도 하다. ‘유리’라는 재료가 제시되면 반자동적으로 ‘공예’라는 장르가 따라붙는 경우가 많은데 심소라의 유리 조형물에서는 공예라는 카테고리의 한정성을 넘어 조소나 회화, 그리고 좀 더 나아가 최근에 유행하는 설치미술로까지 좀 더 폭넓은 스펙트럼을 읽어낼 수 있다. 이는 재료로서의 유리가 가진 표현력과 이것을 재료로 제작된 작품이 전시되는 공간과의 관계성을 읽어내는 맥락으로까지 확장된 개념을 수반하며 공예와는 다른 예술 장르의 영역을 함께 아우르는 미학적 상승효과를 가져다주기도 한다. 2008년 말 스클로 갤러리 개관 5주년을 기념하여 열린 전시에서 심소라는 “건축적인 구조, 구조적인 조각, 조각적인 평면, 평면적인 회화, 회화적인 드로잉, 드로잉적인 설치, 설치적인 공예…”라는 언술을 통해 자신의 작품이 지향하는 장르 통합적이면서 순환적인 작업의 성격을 언급하고 있다.

The glassworks of Sim Sora, who has experimented with glass material for over a decade, are somewhat sculptural and even pictorial, rather than being purely crafts. While glassworks are almost automatically categorized into crafts, Sim’s works are not confined to crafts; they extend their scope into sculpture, painting, and further into installation that is currently in fashion. Her works create aesthetic synergy effects by crossing various genres, and express the features of glass material as well as the relationship between the works and the exhibition spaces. In the exhibition held at the end of 2008 in celebration of the fifth anniversary of Gallery Sklo, Sim explained the direction of her work which aims to be circular by encompassing all genres, as she said: “architectural structure, structural sculpture, sculptural plane, plane painting, pictorial drawing, drawing-like installation, installation-like craft….”
