Private Signs and Social Symptoms: Review on the Works of Soyung Lee

영상, 설치, 사진 등 다양한 매체를 활용하는 이소영 작가는 현대사회 속의 익명의 개인의 삶을 다루는 작가이다. 작가의 작업 속에 드러나는 개인들의 삶은 사적인 형태를 띠고 있지만, 모호하고 불확실한 관계망을 통하여 이들이 속한 사회를 반영하기 때문에, 그 속에서 현대 사회의 고단한 징후들과 지표들이 발견된다. 이러한 징후들은 <Mermaid ProjectⅠ>(2002), <Crossbreeds>(2004), <Dreamer’s Lovers_Part 1>(2006), <Cloud-Cuckoo-Land>(2009)에서처럼 권태나 부조리, 망상의 방식으로 표현되기도 하고 <Yellow>(2004), <The Gummybear’s Town>(2005-2006)에서처럼 고통과 잔혹극으로 표현되기도 한다. 한편 작가는 영상이라는 정교한 장치를 이용하여 사회적 지표를 재&#8211;재현하는 작업을 하기도 한다. 이러한 특징은 <The Missing Toes>(2007), <제 2의 보금자리>(2012), <이보다 더 좋을 순 없다>(2012)에서 드러나는 특징들이다. 또한 영상의 내러티브를 이용하여 거대한 서사의 한 축을 이루는 개인의 이야기를 기술하는데, <After You>(2012-2013), <Take Your Place>(2012-2013) 등이 이러한 작업이다. 본 글은 이처럼 작가 이소영이 영상적 장치들을 이용하여 중의적이고도 복잡한 개인의 일상의 징후들을 거슬러 보편적인 사회의 지표를 짚어내는 방식을 살펴보고자 한다.

Soyung Lee deals with anonymous lives of individuals in modern society, using diverse media including video, installation, and photography. In Lee’s works, the private lives of individuals show the signs and indexes of fatiguing life in modern society, since they reflect the society they belong to through an obscure and uncertain network. These signs are expressed either as boredom, absurdity, or delusion as seen in the cases of Mermaid Project (2002), Crossbreeds (2004), Dreamer's Lovers_Part 1(2006), and Cloud-Cuckoo-Land(2009), or as pain or the theater of cruelty as exemplified by Yellow(2004) and The Gummybear's Town(2005-2006). Meanwhile, the artist re-represents the social symptoms using a sophisticated medium, video, as in the cases of The Missing Toes(2007), The Second Home(2012), and As Good As It Gets(2012). In such works as After You(2012-2013) and Take Your Place (2012-2013), she uses narrative videos to describe a story of a person that constitutes a part of a grand narrative. Thus this article examines the way the artist uses video devices as she figures out social context out of the ambiguous and complex signs of personal lives.
