A Study on Application of Bill of Lading ISBP to Business Practices

A bill of lading is a transportation document that is used to acknowledge the receipt of a shipment of goods. Such document is issued to a shipper by a transportation company or a carrier and is an evidence of contract of carriage. As well as acknowledging the receipt of goods the document also indicates the particular vessel on which the goods have been placed, where they are heading as a final destination and the terms for transporting the shipment to its final destination. The role of such document is becoming increasingly important in the fields of international trade as it plays its role as a contact of carriage. With the increasing importance of the document the acceptance requirements of transport documents including bill of lading has been prescribed in UCP. This is further explained in bill of lading ISBP Paragraph 91 to 114 Application of UCP 600. This paper aims to examine the relevant provisions of UCP 600 on bill of lading, a typical marine transportation document and to provide document examination standards in the matter of consistency of bill of lading once practical business attentiveness has been studied based on ISBP 681.
