A Feasibility Study of Medical Cruise Tourism using an VRIO Analysis

Recently South Korea has entered jobless growth era. Jobless growth is an economic phenomenon in which a macro economy experiences growth while maintaining or decreasing its level of employment. The South Korean government is committed to the expansion of employment. The tourism industry is an industry that requires a lot of staff but low value added. The purpose of this study aims to propose the feasibility for the new employment market in the field of maritime business. Based on the ideas of this work, government may create additional job opportunities and stimulate nations industry vigorously with high value added. The South Korean government has recommended MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition). In this sense, convergence strategy between cruise and medical tourism may result in creating high value added jobs. Medical tourism is patient movement from highly developed nations to other areas of the world for medical care, usually to find treatment at a lower cost. Cruise tourism industry in Korea is regarded as a new growth engine. Medical Cruise tourism will develop a new form of tourism products. In this study, we use a technique to explore VRIO (Value, Rarity, Imitability, and Organization) analysis for implementing of a cruise company. In the results of the analysis, we attempted to describe a VRIO framework of Medical Cruise tourism. The study anticipates the economic impacts from the effect of convergence between health tourism and cruise ship tourism would create invaluable markets. The implementation of this idea will have to be promoted strategically through the initiative of South Korea government. The paper recognizes that the VRIO analysis matrix is useful for improving the Medical Cruise tourism attractiveness and needed for its improvement. This claim is definitely marked on the VRIO matrix.
