영어 강의의(English Medium Instruction) 실태 및 효과에 대한 학생들의 지각 성향에 관한 조사 연구

Student Beliefs and Attitudes about English Medium Instruction: Report of Questionaire Study

영어가 세계적인 공용어로 인식 되어감에 따라 영어능력이 매우 중요하게 인식되면서 전공과목을 영어로 강의하는 EMI가 전 세계적으로 확산되고 있다. 그러나 EMI가 학습자의 영어능력에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구는 아직 제한적인 수준에 머물러 있다. 영어강의의 효과를 극대화하기 위해서는 학생들의 영어능력과 교수들의 영어강의능력, 그리고 강의를 지원해주는 시스템이 모두 중요하지만 현실적으로는 이에 대한 별도의 지원이 거의 없는 현실이다. 따라서 본 연구는 현재 전공과목을 영어로 듣고 있는 Y 대학교 공과대학 410명을 대상으로 영어강의의 실태에 관해 조사하고, 학생자신의 영어능력에 대한 지각정도와 영어로 진행되는 강의의 효과와의 관계, 영어강의에 대한 불안과 효과 지각과의 관계 등을 보았다. 그 결과 영어로 진행되는 수업에서 토론이나 발표는 한국어와 영어가 함께 사용되는 경우가 많았으며 학생들의 문법적 오류나 부정확한 단어사용에 대한 feedback 이 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 둘째, 자신의 영어능력에 대해 우수하다고 평가하는 학생일수록 영어강의의 효과에 대해 긍정적으로 지각하고 있고 영어강의에 대한 불안수준이 낮을수록 영어강의의 효과를 긍정적으로 평가하고 있어 학생들이 영어강의를 듣기 위한 준비과정이 필요하다. 셋째 자신의 영어능력을 낮게 지각하는 학생일수록 영어강의 수강을 위한 예비과정과 영어강의를 보조해 줄 조교가 필요하다는 인식을 가지고 있다.

The status of English as lingua franca in international communication has led nations to search for effective English instruction methods, and English medium instruction (EMI) is being introduced in many non-English speaking countries as a way of improving students' English proficiency. Despite the increasing popularity of EMI, little attention has been paid to evaluating the effectiveness of EMI and its impact on students and instructors. This study explores these issues, focused on the case of the College of Engineering at Y University. A survey questionnaire was administered to 410 engineering students who took EMI courses in the Fall of 2003. The survey results show that:l) Both English and Korean were being used in EMI courses for class activities such as discussions and presentations. 2) The students were not provided with feedback on grammatical mistakes. 3) A significant correlation was found between the students'self-perceived English proficiency and their evaluation of the effectiveness of EMI. 3) Low proficient learners of English pointed out that they needed assistance on their English. The study indicates that successful implementation of EMI depends on students'linguistic readiness and instructors'training.
