연극적 놀이 텍스트로 읽는 <배비장전>

<배비장전>은 그 동안 풍자와 해학, 특히 풍자를 중심으로 해석되어 왔다. 그런데 이 작품은 판소리계 소설로서 판소리에 뿌리를 둔 것인 바, 판소리의 연극적 속성 이상의 ‘연극적 놀이’ 텍스트로서의 특징을 잘 갖추고 있다. 이에 이 글은 <배비장전>이라는 텍스트의 특징을 ‘연극적 놀이’ 양상에서 찾을 수 있음을 보여주면서, 이 연극적 놀이 양상을 통해 <배비장전>을 읽는 재미를 찾아보고자 했다. <배비장전>은 서사 텍스트임에도 불구하고 연기 의식이 분명한 인물들이 만들어내는 연극적 놀이 양상이 잘 드러나 있다. 배비장은 연기 의식은 약하나 연극의 중심 인물로서 희극적 추락을 경험한다. 그리고 애랑과 방자는 다양한 현실 공간을 연극 공간으로 활용하면서 배비장의 희극적 추락을 이끌어낸다. 이런 연극적 놀이 속에서 배비장은 남들이 연기를 하면서 가면을 쓰는 것과는 달리 연극 공간에 들어가면서 위선의 가면을 벗기 시작하는데, 이 과정에서 그는 그를 따돌렸던 세계로 가까이 가고 있었고, 그 결과 화해적 결말이 가능했던 것이다. 이처럼 <배비장전>은 연극적 놀이 텍스트로 읽을 때 기왕의 독법과는 다른 텍스트의 재미를 느낄 수 있다. 이 재미는 이 텍스트 속 인물들의 재미이면서, 아울러 텍스트를 읽는 독자의 재미이기도 하다. 연극적 놀이를 통해 연기하는 사람들은 ‘현실적 삶’과 ‘연극적 삶’을 넘나들며 삶의 재미를 느끼고 있고, 독자들은 서사 텍스트 속에 이러한 연극적 놀이가 구현되는 양상에서 흥미를 느낄 수 있기 때문이다.

Until now, Baebijangjeon(裵裨將傳), for the most part, has been interpreted by satire and humor, especially by satire. However, I think, this work has also the characteristic of 'dramatic play' in it and it needs to be noticed by that character. Baebijangjeon shows well-provided characteristics as a 'dramatic play' text which is inherited the dramatism of Pansori. Baebijangjeon is a narrative text. But this text shows dramatism which is made by the figures who have definite play-acting consciousness. Baebijang(裵裨將), as a main character, participates in play, even though he himself has a weak play-acting consciousness, and experiences dramatic downfall. Aerang(愛娘) and Banja(房子) leads him to his dramatic downfall, using various real places as a stage. In this dramatic play Baebijang is got to throw off his hypocritical mask as different as others wear mask in drama-play, and as a result, harmonic ending was possible. Thus, we can feel pleasure in Baebijangjeon, reading it as a dramatic play text different from other ways of reading. This pleasure is the pleasure of the figures in the text and also the readers' pleasure. The people who participate in dramatic play feel the pleasure of living fictional life haunting 'realistic life' and 'dramatic life'. The readers who are out of the text also can read it interestingly by this trait.
