An Analysis on the Management Efficiency of Korean Ocean Shipping Firms

Since the BDI which shows market outlooks of the tramp shipping had been reached up to 13,500 points in the 2nd half of 2008, the shipping markets had been recessional in around 2,000 points of BDI presently. The main reasons of the market recessions are recognized as global economic impacts resulted from both delay of economic recovery in America & EU and such Mediterranean countries as Greese, etc. The ocean-going shipping companies in Korean registry are presumed to have faced same difficulties as the afore-mentioned. The decrease of freight income is known bringing about sea casualties owing to insufficient maintenance of the fleets for saving cost. This paper is aimed to present a kind of useful management guidelines by analyzing Korean shipping firms' management efficiencies. This paper used the DEA model as analysis tool, and number of employees and ships, capital, deadweight and sales volumes out of total 50 shipping firms are considered as input and output data. As a result 19 enterprises whose values of BCC efficiency 1, 6 enterprises whose CCR efficiency 1 was ascertained. RTS indicated DRS of 14 firms, CRS of 19 firms, and IRS of 13 firms.
