Triffin Dilemma and Global Imbalances in Historical Perspective

브레튼 우즈 체제 실패의 근저에는 트리핀 딜레마와 경상수지 불균형이 있다. 서독과 일본의 경제부흥에 힘입어 달러부족사태를 극복한 후 달러신인도가 떨어져 체제붕괴를 맞았다. 그러나 국제통화로서 달러의 지위는 낮아지지 않았고 이것이 가끔 브레튼 우즈 Ⅱ로 지칭되면서 글로벌 불균형이 누적되었다. 이러한 상황은 2008년 세계금융위기 이후에도 큰 변화가 없다. 역사적 조망과 함께 진단과 처방을 시도한다.

The failure of the Bretton Woods system has its roots in the Triffin Dilemma and the imbalance in the current accounts. Thanks to the reconstruction of West German and Japanese economies, dollar shortage was overcome, but afterwards the confidence in dollar dropped which culminated in the fall of the system. However, the role of the dollar as an international currency sustained with accumulation of the global imbalances. This situation did not change much even after the world financial crisis of 2008. Historical interpretation with diagnosis and prescription is tried.
