중학교 방과후학교 운영과 사범대 전공수업 연계를 통한 교육실습 강화 방안 탐색

An exploration of enhancing secondary-level teaching practicum through the joint operation of an after-school program of a middle school and a university course: Focused on English subject

This paper explored a possibility of enhancing teaching practicum in a teacher's college by making pre-service teachers develop and operate an after-school program in a middle school and take a follow-up university course. Ten secondary level pre-service English teachers, along with eight pre-service Mathematics and Korean teachers, participated in an after-school teaching practicum which was held in a middle school for three weeks during a winter break. Their duties ranged from curriculum development and class teaching to student guidance to school administration for 43 middle school students, with advice and support from seven middle school teachers and three professors. In the following semester, they took a seminar course offered in the department of English Education, where they reviewed, analyzed, and improved the curriculum and lessons they had used for the after-school program. In order to explore the feasibility and sustainability of the new teaching practicum program, middle school students' and pre-service teachers' perceptions of the program were examined via evaluation questionnaires and pre-service English teachers' teaching portfolios, essays, and term papers. Based on the results, this study discusses the possibility of and suggestions for using after-school programs of secondary level schools as a practicum site in conjunction with a university course to extend teaching practicum for pre-service teachers.
