Housing Characteristics of Young Professionals in TV Dramas

The purpose of this study was to explore young professionals' housing characteristics reflected in TV drama in order to illuminate gap between housing reflected in media and that in reality. Three series of TV drama broadcasted within the last five years (2008-2012) that had one or more characters who were identified to be young professionals in their 20s living apart from their parents were selected for this study. Socio-economic and housing characteristics of the characters were analyzed mainly using visual cues, dialogues, and Internet search. It was found that many dramas tried to include non-traditional housing characteristics such as a rooftop house and non-family households to reflect limited housing affordability of young professionals. Considering the size, interior and furnishing of the units, however, the real cost to achieve the same level of housing status could be over the affordable level of general young professionals in reality.
