현행 한국예불의 문제점과 방향

Buddhist Rituals in Contemporary Korea: Issues and Alternatives

이 논문에서는 현행 예불문을 통해 나타나는 불교의례의 목적, 대상, 역사성, 사상성, 기능, 언어, 예능화, 계층화, 통일성 등의 현안점과 그것들에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 그 결과, 현행 예불문은 다음과 같이 재정립 될 필요가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 의례의 목적을 사성제를 포함한 붇다의 기본 가르침의 외부적 표현에 두고, 의례의 주체는 불교에 관심 있는 모든 출재가자로 설정한다; 의례의 기능도 현행의 기복 차원에서 벗어나, 불교의 현실적 실천을 위한 수행의 한 방법으로 재정립 될 필요가 있다; 이를 위해 의례문은 전국의 사찰에서 공통적으로 사용할 수 있는 공통 의례문을 뜻을 이해할 수 있는 한글로 다시 작성되고, 형식은 운문체 등의 활용을 통해 일정수준의 예능화도 고려되어야 할 것이다; 의례 공간도 초기불교의 정신에 맞게 출재가자 간 평등성이 실현될 수 있도록 재배치한다. 특히 중요한 것은 의례문의 내용인데, 중국화된 불교 전통에서 벗어나 초기불교의 핵심 가르침을 반영토록 할 필요가 있다.

This paper aimed to examine impending issues represented in current Buddhist ritual texts, which include the purpose of Buddhist ritual, its target, historicity, ideology, role, language, performance, stratification, and unification, and attempted to analyze them. This research came to a conclusion as follows: Buddhist ritual in contemporary Korea needs to serve as an outer expression of the basic teachings of the Buddha, including the Four Noble Truths; the target audience of Buddhist ritual need to include all the people who are interested in Buddhism regardless of their monastic or secular status; the role of Buddhist ritual needs to be reestablished beyond a method of prayer for good fortune and as a soteriological way to materialize the Buddha's teaching into action in reality; ritual texts in literary Chinese should be translated into the vernacular Korean; they also need to be in verse; the ritual space needs to be rearranged in agreement with the Buddhist spirit of equality among Buddhist followers, both monastics and laity; and what is more significant is the contents of ritual texts and they need to reflect the core of the essential teachings of the Buddha, including Four Noble Truths, free from the Sinicized Buddhist tradition.
