화서학파(華西學派)의 습례(習禮)와 행례(行禮) 공부

이 글에서는 화서 이항로와 그의 문인(門人)들이 행한 습례(習禮)가 어떤 활동인지를 밝히고, 그것이 당시 유학지식인들에게 가진 의의가 무엇인지 고찰하였다. 더불어 습례 공부를 기반으로 화서문인들이 향촌과 가정에서 실시한 관례와 향례의 행례활동을 확인하였다. 화서학파에서 실시한 습례는 예를 강학하는 활동과 병행하여 전개한 독특한 예(禮) 공부의 형태였다. 습례는 일상이나 향촌에서 시행해야 하는 관례(冠禮)나 향례(鄕禮)를 행위자가 시연(試演)하여 익숙해지는 활동으로서 예의 의장(儀章)과 도수(度數)를 익히는 절차를 의미한다. 이것은 의례 서적을 강토하는 것과 별도로, 주어진 의례의 세세한 절차를 몸에 익히는 활동이었다. 습례 활동은 유가에서 추구하는 예의 본원적 측면-義-과 함께 예의 외형적 측면-儀-까지 겸비하려는 노력의 일환이었다. 화서와 그의 문인들은 습례를 통해 익힌 의례를 자신이 거주하는 지역사회에서 시행하였다. 의례의 실질적 수행을 위해 이들은 문인들 상호간에 의례를 주관하거나 참여하였다. 또한 문인들의 강학 모임에서 의례적 삶을 위한 다짐으로서 독계 절차를 시행하는 노력을 전개하였다. 이런 노력은 의례의 학습을 이론적, 지적 수준에서 그치지 않고, 실천을 위한 단계로 승화하려는 노력이었다고 평가할 수 있다. 이들에게 습례와 의례 실천의 행례는 소학단계와 대학 단계에서의 강학 공부를 확대해 나가는 실천 공부의 마지막 단계라고 할 수 있다.

This article reveal what is Seuprye(習禮) that Yihangro and his disciples emphasized as Confucian education, and the significance of Seuprye discussed for them. In addition, practical activities of the ritual(禮) of home and the community were identified. Seuprye is a unique example that is the form of ritual study. Seuprye means a process to learn the Confucian manners and modus in family and the local community(鄕村). In order to study the ritual, the teachers educated the emotion of ritual and concrete manners. They collaborated and encouraged their colleague in order to perform the rituals which is important. In the confucian seminar, they decided that they should carry out the rituals and declared this decision to the colleague. We can evaluate that these efforts to practice the rituals are the procedures to overcome the practical problems which a theoretical study can cause in moral education.
