The purpose of the present study is to examine Japanese corporations in their attempt to deal with the problems arising from the mass retirement of the "dankai" generation and henceforth shed a light on its counterparts of Korea. The reason for the need to analyze specific cases of Japanese corporations is that as the retirement of the baby-boomers of Korea is starting to proceed with steadfast urgency, there rises the necessity to devise a systematic and concrete back-up policy. The following implications were obtained as a result of closely looking into the issues and countermeasures thereof, regarding the retirement of the "dankai" generation from the corporations' perspective. First, Korean corporations must take the initiative to facilitate the smooth succession of the manufacturing knowledge and skill. There is also a need to examine the competiveness of the manufacture industry in response to the retirement of baby-boomer generation. Second, there is the pressing need for improvements on the policy concerning the extension of the present Korean retirement age. In particular, corporations should be given enough time to adjust and implement their policies in order to increase the retirement age. Third, support system must be implemented for the medium and small-sized companies which inevitably will be more willing to open their doors to senior work force. Policies should be examined and revised so that professional manpower retiring from conglomerates may be assisted to be re-employed in smaller companies. Fourth, Korea should seek to accept the Japanese "dankai" generation retirees in an attempt to learn and utilize their know-how in the field of technology that they possess. The experience and practical hands-on knowledge that they acquired from medium small-sized companies may, in turn, boost the competitiveness of the Korean manufacturing industry.
