글로벌 이주 시대의 재외 한인타운의 재구성과 민족간 관계 연구

Transformation of Ethnic Enclave by Negotiations of Trans-migrants' Ethnic Groups in Flushing Koreatown, New York City

본 연구는 뉴욕 플러싱 한인타운의 한인과 조선족 이주자에 의해 재구성되는 민족경관과 민족간 관계를 분석하여, 다양한 행위 주체에 의해 형성되는 이주자 엔클레이브의 문화지리적 특성과 정체성의 경합을 둘러싼 민족간 관계의 특성을 밝히고자 하였다 특히 트랜스이주자들의 유입으로 한인타운의 혼종적 경관이 어떻게 변화되는지, 그리고 조선족 이주자의 혼성 적 이고 유연적인 정체성이 이주자 집단 간의 관계를 어떻게 재구성하는지에 주목하였다 70년대 이후 지속되고 있는 한인 트랜스이주자의 유입으로 인해 뉴욕의 한인타운은 공간적으로 분화ㆍ확산되고 있으며, 각각의 한인타운은 이주자의 성격에 따라 독특한 장소성을 지니게 된다. 조선족 이주자들의 한인타운 유입 역시 빠르게 증가하고 있는데, 이 들은 한인타운과 차이나타운의 경계지점 들에서 자신들의 경관을 확대해가면서 이 곳을 성공적인 정착을 위한 인큐베이터 로 바꾸어가고 있다 경 계 상의 존재로서, 경계의 양쪽을 넘나드는 존재로서 이들은 유연적 정체성을 구사하며 사잇공간을 확대시켜 가고 있다.

This paper investigates the socio-spatiality of ethnic landscapes (re)constructed by Korean-Chinese as well as Korean immigrants so as to delve into the transformation of ethnic enclave and relations by the influx of various groups of immigrants. Particular focus goes on the dynamics of hybrid landscapes and flexible identity in and around an ethnic enclave of Koreatown caused by the new immigrants performing transmigration in the era of globalization and transnationalism. As Korean transmigrants coming more and more into New York area in recent decades, several Koreatowns are widely diffused and differentiated into various particular localities according to the characteristics of the migrants settlers in. Korean-Chinese transmigrants are increasingly coming into the Flushing Koreatown which is located side by side with Chinatown and other ethnic communities, and taking advantages of the Koreatown as a kind of incubator for their successful settling down. They occupy the spaces of betweenness of Koreatown and Chinatown, and thus practice flexible identities to retain and compromise both Korean and Chinese cultures.
