The use of adapted stories in elementary English education: Focusing on vocabulary learning

This study is designed to develop and apply a lesson model using adapted stories for sixth graders, and to investigate the effects of the adaptive stories on the students' vocabulary, reading ability, and affective attitudes. The results are as follows. First, the lesson model proposed in the study helped the students improve their vocabulary learning, mostly for the middle and lower level students. In addition, the experimental group retained more vocabulary items than the control group in vocabulary retention tests. Second, the lesson model increased student reading ability, and the middle and lower level students have shown salient improvements. Third, the lesson model also contributed to increasing student interest in English, mostly among the middle level students, due to the simplified content of the adapted stories. Those stories made them gain confidence in comprehending the contents, facilitating enjoying English lessons in itself.
